Yesterday, I went out with my friend Jack to try that Cantonese food, which we called “dim sum” that I have never tried before. I’ve heard about it a lot, but never actually had the chance to try it. So, I was super excited to find out what it was all about.
First, we walked into this bustling restaurant, and I could smell that good food already. The waiter came by and guided us to our table. We sat down, and before we ordered food, they already got a pot of hot tea on our table. Jack told me that having dim sum is also called “yum cha” in Cantonese, which means drinking tea. So, drinking tea is a big part of this whole experience!
Ordering the Food
Next, the waitress brought over a little order sheet and explained how it worked. Basically, you just tick off what you want from a huge list of different small dishes. I saw the names like “har gow,” and I was like, “What’s that?” There were so many choices, from steamed buns to fried dumplings, I didn’t even know where to start!
I let Jack order a few since he’s had dim sum before. He picked out some classic stuff like shrimp dumplings, which they call “har gow”, and some other things I didn’t recognize. I just nodded along, trusting his choices. Also, I noticed that people were sharing their dishes with each other. Jack told me it was meant to be shared among family and friends, kind of like Spanish tapas.
Eating the Dim Sum
When the food started coming out, it was like a never-ending parade of bamboo steamers and small plates. The shrimp dumplings, har gow, were amazing – they were like these little translucent pockets filled with juicy shrimp. Jack called it the “king of dim sum.” I could see why! It was so good, I was really blown away.
- Har Gow (Shrimp Dumplings) – These were the bomb!
- Other Stuff – I don’t remember all the names, but there were these sticky rice things, some fried goodies, and a bunch of other tasty stuff.
Each dish was just a few bites, which was perfect because we got to try so many different things. I was stuffing my face, trying to keep up with all the new flavors. It was a bit overwhelming, but in a good way.
Wrapping it Up
By the end of the meal, I was stuffed. We had eaten so much, and I realized that dim sum is more than just a meal, it’s a whole experience. It’s about sharing food, trying new things, and enjoying time with friends or family. I finally understood why people make such a big deal about it.
So, that was my first dim sum adventure. I went in not knowing what to expect and came out totally impressed. I’m definitely going back for more, and next time, I’ll be a bit more prepared for the delicious chaos that is dim sum.
