Alright, so I found myself wandering down the aisles at Woolies the other day. Been feeling a bit sluggish, you know? Thought maybe I’d try cutting out gluten for a bit, see if it helps. Hardest part? Giving up bread. Seriously, what’s a morning without toast?

So, I was on a mission: find some decent gluten-free bread. Headed over to the bakery section first, then remembered they usually stick the ‘free from’ stuff somewhere else. Found it eventually, tucked away near the health foods. Not a huge selection, but a few different kinds.
Finding the Right Loaf
Saw some fancy brands, looked okay I guess, but the price tag, jeez. Always seems like you pay a premium for taking stuff out. Decided to just grab the Woolworths own brand one. Figured I’d start there, see what it’s like. The packaging looked pretty standard, nothing special. Looked like bread, sort of. Smaller loaf than usual, though.
Got it home, felt a bit skeptical. I’ve heard stories about gluten-free bread tasting like cardboard or just falling apart. Decided the best bet was to toast it. That usually helps with the texture, right?
The Moment of Truth
Popped two slices in the toaster. They browned up alright, maybe a bit quicker than regular bread. The smell was… different. Not bad, just not that lovely yeasty smell you get from normal toast.
Slapped some butter on them. The texture felt okay, a bit dense maybe. Took a bite.

My thoughts?
- It wasn’t terrible. Let’s start there.
- Definitely denser than normal bread.
- A bit crumbly around the edges, even toasted.
- The taste was okay. A little bland, maybe? Lacked that satisfying chewiness.
Look, it’s not going to fool anyone into thinking it’s regular bread. Not even close. But, as a vehicle for butter or some avocado? It did the job. It didn’t fall apart completely, which is a win in my book for gluten-free.
Would I buy it again? Yeah, maybe. If I’m sticking with this no-gluten thing, it’s an option. It’s not amazing gourmet bread, but it beats having nothing toast-like at all. It’s edible, does the trick in a pinch. Better than some others I’ve tried ages ago that were genuinely awful. So, yeah. Progress, I guess?
