So, about this dim sum club thing. It wasn’t really planned, you know? It just sort of… happened. I remember I was chatting with a couple of folks from my old neighborhood group online. We were just talking about food, like we usually do.

Someone mentioned how hard it was to get a good group together for proper dim sum. You need a decent number of people to really try a variety of dishes, right? Otherwise, you order like three things and you’re stuffed. That’s no fun.

Then it hit me. Why don’t we make it a regular thing? I just threw the idea out there. “Hey, what if we aimed for dim sum once a month? Just us.”

First, I needed to see who was actually serious. I started a simple group chat. Didn’t use anything fancy, just the app we were already using. I added the few people I knew definitely loved dim sum.

Getting it Rolling

The first challenge was scheduling. Oh boy. Trying to find a weekend morning that worked for five, then six, then eventually eight people? It was tough. We went back and forth for like, two weeks just for the first meeting.

  • Someone always had family stuff.
  • Someone else worked weekends sometimes.
  • Then there was the location debate – which part of town was fair for everyone?

We finally settled on a place downtown. Kind of a middle ground. I made the reservation. Felt a bit like herding cats, honestly. But I was determined to make it work because I really wanted that regular dim sum fix.

The First Meetup

That first time was great. We totally over-ordered, naturally. Har gow, siu mai, char siu bao, sticky rice in lotus leaf… everything. We just pointed at pictures mostly. We talked, we ate, we complained about how full we were. It felt good. Like, this is what Sunday mornings should be.

Keeping it Going

After that first success, it got a bit easier. We decided to rotate who picks the restaurant. That helped with the location arguments. We also got a bit more relaxed about attendance. If someone couldn’t make it one month, no big deal. The core group usually showed up.

We’ve been doing it for over a year now. Found some amazing spots, and some not-so-amazing ones. Had some funny moments, like when we accidentally ordered way too much tofu pudding. We still laugh about that.

It’s not always perfect. Sometimes people drop out last minute, or we have trouble deciding on a place. But mostly, it works. It’s just a simple thing, getting together for food. But it’s become this nice little ritual. A good way to catch up and just enjoy some damn good dim sum.
