So, I’ve been trying to be more health-conscious lately, you know, watching what I eat and all that. And I kept hearing about this thing called “ragi.” Some folks say it’s like a superfood, packed with nutrients and all. But the big question for me was, is ragi gluten-free or not?
See, I’ve been trying to cut down on gluten. Not that I’m celiac or anything, but I just feel better when I eat less of it. I did some reading about ragi. Turns out, ragi is also called finger millet. Who knew?
I started my research with checking some diet blogs. I found out that ragi is actually a pretty big deal in some parts of the world, especially in India.
Then I tried to find out what exactly gluten is. It’s like this protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. Some people have a condition called celiac disease where their body really can’t handle gluten. It messes up their digestive system.
So, I dove deeper into the gluten in ragi, or the lack of it. I checked some articles from health websites. The good news is, all sources confirmed that ragi is naturally gluten-free. It doesn’t have any of that gluten protein that’s found in wheat.
I also checked how much gluten is in all-purpose flour. And I found out that it has like 8-11% gluten. For bread flour, it is even higher, like 12-14%. But for ragi? Zero.
Making Ragi Porridge
Excited with my findings, I decided to give ragi a try. I bought some ragi flour from the Indian store near my place. First thing I tried making was ragi porridge. It was pretty simple, actually.
- I mixed the ragi flour with water and cooked it on the stove.
- Stirred it until it thickened up, like oatmeal.
- Added some honey and nuts for flavor.
It was surprisingly tasty! And the best part? No gluten worries. Since then, I’ve tried making other things with ragi, like these flatbread things called roti. They turned out pretty good too.
So, yeah, that’s my little adventure with ragi. Turns out, it’s not just hype. It really is gluten-free and a pretty cool grain to add to your diet. If you’re looking for a gluten-free option or just want to try something new, I’d say give ragi a shot. It worked out pretty well for me.
