Okay, so yesterday I decided to hit up Maxim’s in Hong Kong for some dim sum. I’ve heard so much about it, and, you know, I had to see what the fuss was all about.

Getting There

First things first, getting there. I hopped on the MTR and got off at Central station. From there, it was a bit of a walk, maybe 10-15 minutes? I used my phone’s GPS to guide me – wouldn’t want to get lost and miss out on those dumplings!

The Experience

When I walked in, wow, the place was buzzing. It’s huge! Like, seriously, it’s this massive, traditional-looking banquet hall. Lots of red and gold, you know, the classic Chinese restaurant vibe. And it was packed! Families, groups of friends, everyone chattering away and digging in.

I managed to snag a table, thankfully. It’s the kind of place where you might have to share a table with strangers, but luckily, I got one to myself this time. They gave me an order sheet, and I started circling all the goodies I wanted.

The Food!

  • Har Gow (Shrimp Dumplings): These were my absolute favorite. Plump, juicy shrimp wrapped in this delicate, translucent skin. So good!
  • Siu Mai (Pork Dumplings): Another classic, and they did it right. Savory and flavorful.
  • Char Siu Bao (BBQ Pork Buns): Fluffy, slightly sweet buns filled with that delicious, sticky BBQ pork.
  • Spring Rolls: Crispy, crunchy, and filled with veggies. A nice contrast to the steamed dumplings.
  • Cheung Fun (Rice Noodle Rolls):I ordered the simple ones, and they were silky smooth.

I ordered a pot of tea too, which is pretty much mandatory with dim sum. Gotta wash it all down, right?

The Verdict

Honestly, it lived up to the hype. The food was great, the atmosphere was lively, and it felt like a real, authentic Hong Kong experience. I totally stuffed myself, and it was worth every penny (or, well, Hong Kong dollar). I definitely recommend checking it out if you’re in Hong Kong and want some seriously good dim sum. Just be prepared for a bit of a wait, especially during peak hours!

It is also worth noting to check what branch I want to go to before heading out. I went to the City Hall branch, there may be several around the city.
