Okay, so I’ve been on this gluten-free journey for a while now, and let me tell you, finding good baked goods is a struggle. I was in Austin last week and thought, “Why not try to find some gluten-free bakeries?” I mean, Austin’s known for its food scene, right?

So, I did what anyone would do – I Googled it. Typed in “gluten-free bakery Austin” and boom, a bunch of places popped up. I saw some names like Sophie’s Gluten-Free Bake Shop, Upper Crust Bakery, and even one called Zucchini Kill. That last one caught my eye because, you know, it’s different.

I decided to hit up a few of these spots. First up was Sophie’s. I walked in, and it smelled like a regular bakery, which was awesome. They had all sorts of stuff – bread, cookies, cakes. I grabbed a loaf of bread and a couple of cupcakes to try.

My bakery hopping adventure

  • Sophie’s Gluten-Free Bake Shop: This place was pretty solid. The bread was actually really good, not dry or crumbly like some gluten-free breads I’ve had. The cupcakes were tasty too, a bit on the sweeter side, but good.
  • Upper Crust Bakery: I think this one wasn’t exclusively gluten-free, but they had options. I tried a muffin, and it was okay. Nothing to write home about, but it satisfied my craving for a baked treat.
  • Zucchini Kill Bakery: This place was cool! It had this whole punk rock vibe going on, and everything was vegan and gluten-free. I tried one of their pastries. It was different, a little dense, but I appreciated the uniqueness.
  • Gati Ice Cream: This place did not sell baked goods. But they had great ice cream.

After hitting up those three, I also stumbled upon a place called Maaribu and another one called Spoondrift Bakery. I didn’t get a chance to try everything, but from what I did taste, I’d say Austin’s got some decent options for us gluten-free folks. They had different styles. So, you can find something you like.

Honestly, it was a fun little adventure, hopping from bakery to bakery. It is not easy to make gluten-free baked goods that taste good, you know? I feel like these places in Austin are doing a pretty good job. If you’re ever in Austin and need your gluten-free fix, I’d say check them out. You might find your new favorite treat! And one more thing, there seems to be a place called Bread-ish, I didn’t get to try it, but people say it has the best gluten-free bread, maybe next time!
