Alright, so the other day, I got this question stuck in my head: “Is sugar gluten-free?” I mean, I’ve heard about gluten-free diets and all that, but I never really thought about sugar specifically. So, I decided to dig into it.

First, I did what anyone would do – I hit up Google. I typed in “is sugar gluten free” and started going through the results. There was a lot of stuff out there, some saying yes, some saying it depends. It got a little confusing, to be honest.

Then, I started looking at different types of sugar. I know there’s your regular white sugar, brown sugar, powdered sugar, and probably a bunch of others I don’t even use. I wanted to see if any of these were different when it came to gluten.

  • White Sugar: From what I gathered, white sugar seemed pretty straightforward. It’s just processed sugar cane or sugar beets, and there’s no gluten involved in that.
  • Brown Sugar: Brown sugar is basically white sugar with molasses added. Again, no gluten there.
  • Powdered Sugar: Now, this one was a bit trickier. Powdered sugar is super fine, and sometimes they add cornstarch to keep it from clumping. I found out that cornstarch is usually gluten-free, so that seemed okay too.

After reading a bunch of articles and blogs, I felt pretty confident that regular sugar, in its pure form, is gluten-free. It makes sense, right? Sugar comes from plants that don’t have gluten to begin with.

But then I started thinking about processed foods. You know, like candy, cakes, cookies – all the good stuff. Just because the sugar itself is gluten-free doesn’t mean these treats are. They’ve got other ingredients that might have gluten, like flour or barley malt.

My Conclusion

So, here’s what I figured out: if you’re just talking about plain old sugar – white, brown, powdered – it’s gluten-free. But, if you’ve got celiac disease or you’re super sensitive to gluten, you still gotta read those labels on packaged foods. Sugar might be safe, but other ingredients might not be. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, you know? I wrote all these down so I won’t forget about it, also, I can share it with you guys!
