Alright, let’s talk about this barley stuff. Folks keep askin’ me, “Is barley gluten-free?” Well, lemme tell ya, it ain’t. Plain and simple. No sirree, it ain’t.
Ya see, there’s these three grains, wheat, barley, and rye. They got this thing called gluten in ’em. And for some folks, that gluten ain’t good. Makes ’em sick, real sick. Doctors call it celiac disease, or somethin’ like that. Fancy names for a bellyache, if ya ask me.
- Wheat: They grind it up all fancy-like, but it still got that gluten.
- Barley: Sometimes they leave it whole, sometimes they peel it a bit. Still got the gluten.
- Rye: Don’t see much of that around here, but it’s got the gluten too.
Now, some folks say barley ain’t got as much gluten as wheat. Maybe so, maybe not. But it’s still got enough to make ya sick if you’re one of them gluten-sensitive types. They say barley’s got about 5 to 8 percent gluten. Sounds like a little, but it’s enough to cause a whole heap of trouble, believe you me.
So, if you’re tryin’ to stay away from gluten, you best stay away from barley too. Don’t matter if it’s whole grain, pearled barley, or whatever fancy name they give it. It’s all the same. Gluten is gluten, and barley’s got it.
I remember my old neighbor, Martha, she had that gluten problem. Poor thing couldn’t eat nothin’ good. No bread, no pasta, no nothin’. She tried eatin’ barley once, thinkin’ it might be okay. Oh, she was wrong. Sick as a dog for a week, she was. Had to go see the doctor and everything. Waste of good money, if you ask me.
Now, there are other grains out there that don’t got that gluten. Quinoa, they call it. Fancy name for a little seed, if ya ask me. But folks say it’s good, and it don’t make ya sick. So, if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ to eat instead of barley, maybe try that quinoa stuff. Or rice. Rice is good. Always been good.
I ain’t no doctor, mind you. I’m just tellin’ ya what I know. And what I know is that barley ain’t gluten-free. So, if you gotta stay away from gluten, you best stay away from barley. It’s as simple as that.
Don’t go listenin’ to those fancy folks with their fancy words. They’ll try to sell ya anything. Just stick to the basics, that’s what I say. Good, plain food. And if it ain’t good for ya, don’t eat it. That’s my motto.
So, there ya have it. The truth about barley and gluten. Straight from the horse’s mouth, as they say. Though I ain’t never seen a horse talk about barley before. But you get the idea.
And remember, if you’re ever unsure about somethin’, just ask. There’s always someone who knows somethin’. Even if it’s just an old lady like me.
