First things first, I gathered all my ingredients. I had some store-bought frozen dim sum. I figured that would be easier for a first-timer like me. Plus, I got my steamer ready. I made sure it was clean and ready to go because, well, hygiene first, right?

Next up, I filled the bottom part of the steamer with water. I didn’t want to risk running out of water mid-steam, so I made sure it was filled up nicely, about an inch or so. Then, I put the steamer on the stove and cranked up the heat to get that water boiling.

While waiting for the water to boil, I lined the steamer basket with some parchment paper. I heard this helps to prevent the dim sum from sticking, and believe me, you don’t want that mess. Once the water was boiling like crazy, I carefully placed my dim sum in the basket. I made sure not to overcrowd it because each piece needs its own space to cook evenly, you know?

Here comes the tricky part – the steaming time.

  • For the fresh dumplings, I set my timer for about 10 minutes.
  • For the frozen ones, I steamed them for roughly 12 minutes.

You want them to be just right, not too hard and not too soggy. It’s a delicate balance.

After what felt like forever, the timer finally went off. I carefully lifted the lid, making sure to avoid the hot steam. And there they were, my little dim sum, looking all plump and juicy. I used a pair of tongs to take them out. They were super hot, so I had to be extra careful not to burn myself.

Anyway, I hope my little story here helps some of you who are thinking about trying to make dim sum at home. It’s definitely doable, just needs a little patience and a lot of love!
