Alright, so I decided to jump into this dim sum cooking class, and let me tell you, it was quite the experience. I’ve always loved eating dim sum, but making it? That’s a whole other ball game.
First off, I signed up for this course online. It was pretty straightforward – just a simple form, payment, and boom, I was in. They sent me a list of ingredients and tools I’d need, which was super helpful. I spent a good afternoon gathering all the stuff, running around from store to store. It felt like a bit of a treasure hunt, to be honest.
Getting Started
The day of the class, I logged in, all excited and a bit nervous. The instructor was this friendly older lady who clearly knew her stuff. She started by showing us how to make the dough for the dumplings. I thought, “Oh, I’ve made dough before, how hard can it be?” Famous last words, my friends.
The Dough Struggle
- First, we mixed the flour and water.
- Then, we kneaded and kneaded… and kneaded some more. My arms started to feel like jelly.
- The instructor kept saying, “It should be smooth like a baby’s bottom.” Mine was more like… a rough, lumpy mess.
But I kept at it, and eventually, it started to come together. Not quite baby’s bottom smooth, but hey, it was progress.
Filling and Shaping
Next up, we made the fillings. We chopped, we mixed, we seasoned. This part was actually kind of fun. It reminded me of playing with Play-Doh as a kid, but with tastier results.
Then came the tricky part: shaping the dumplings. The instructor made it look so easy. She folded and pinched, and in seconds, she had these perfect little dumplings. I, on the other hand, struggled. My dumplings looked like they’d been through a war. Some were too fat, some were too thin, some just fell apart. It was a mess.
Steaming and Eating
Finally, we steamed our creations. I held my breath, hoping for the best. When I opened the steamer, I was pleasantly surprised. They weren’t perfect, but they were definitely edible. And you know what? They tasted pretty darn good. All that hard work paid off. They were like nothing I’d ever made before, but still delicious.
I learned a lot in this class. I learned that making dim sum is way harder than it looks. I learned that I have a newfound respect for dim sum chefs. And I learned that even if things don’t turn out perfect, they can still be delicious. Would I do it again? Absolutely. It was a blast, and I can’t wait to try making dim sum at home. Maybe next time, my dumplings will actually look like dumplings.
