So, I got this idea the other day. I was craving some good dim sum, but I also wanted a nice cup of tea to go with it. It hit me – why not combine the two? I mean, why not try and make a “dim sum tea”? Sounds crazy, right? But I was like, let’s give it a shot.
First thing I did was hit up the local Chinese grocery store. I walked around, just browsing. Grabbed some classic dim sum ingredients, you know, like shrimp, pork, some veggies, and those little wrappers they use. Also, I picked up some tea leaves, nothing fancy, just some regular oolong tea.
Got home and started experimenting. I steamed some of the dim sum fillings, just like I was making regular dim sum. Then, I took some of the cooked shrimp and pork, chopped them up real fine. Here comes the weird part: I brewed a pot of oolong tea, pretty strong. Once it was done, I strained the tea leaves and started adding in the chopped dim sum fillings into the hot tea.
- Brewed oolong tea
- Chopped cooked dim sum fillings
- Combined them in a pot
I let it all sit there for a bit, maybe 10 minutes, just to let the flavors get to know each other, you know? I was hoping the tea would soak up some of that dim sum goodness. After that, I poured the mixture into a mug, making sure I got some of the fillings in there too.
The Taste Test
Okay, so how did it taste? Honestly, it was… interesting. Not bad, not great, just… different. The tea definitely had a savory kick to it, and you could taste the shrimp and pork. It was like a very light, soupy kind of tea. I even tried adding a little soy sauce, which, surprisingly, made it a bit better.
Would I make it again? Maybe. It was a fun little experiment, and it definitely satisfied my curiosity. It’s not something I’d serve to guests, but it was a cool thing to try out on a lazy Sunday afternoon. If you’re feeling adventurous, give it a go! Just don’t expect a traditional tea experience, that’s for sure. It’s more like a… dim sum broth, I guess?
The whole thing was more about the process, the experimenting, and just seeing what happens. Cooking should be fun, right? Sometimes you gotta break the rules and see what weird and wonderful things you can come up with. And who knows, maybe I’ll stumble upon the next big food trend. Dim sum tea, anyone?
