Dim Sum Bar: What to Order? A Simple Guide for Beginners!

Okay, so I’ve been craving dim sum lately, and I finally decided to do something about it. I thought, why not try making a dim sum bar at home? Sounds fun, right? And you know what? It actually was!

First, I gathered all the stuff I needed. I already had some bamboo steamers, so that was good. I also picked up some parchment paper to line the steamers, so the food wouldn’t stick. Then, the fun part – I went grocery shopping! I grabbed some frozen dumplings, buns, and some fresh veggies. I also got some soy sauce, chili oil, and rice vinegar for dipping.

Next, I started prepping. I chopped up some green onions and cilantro for garnish. Then, I filled a pot with water and brought it to a boil for steaming. While the water was heating up, I lined my bamboo steamers with the parchment paper, making sure to poke a few holes so the steam could get through.

Once the water was boiling, I carefully placed the frozen dumplings and buns in the steamers. I stacked the steamers on top of the pot, put the lid on, and let them steam for about 15-20 minutes, just like the package said.

While the dim sum was steaming, I quickly stir-fried some of the veggies I bought. I just tossed them in a hot pan with a little oil, some garlic, and a splash of soy sauce. Super simple and tasty.

Here’s what I ended up with:

  • Steamed dumplings: These were so juicy and flavorful! I had a mix of pork and shrimp.
  • Steamed buns: I got some fluffy char siu bao (barbecue pork buns) and some sweet custard buns.
  • Stir-fried veggies: A nice healthy side dish to balance out all the carbs.
  • Dipping sauces: Of course, you gotta have the sauces! Soy sauce, chili oil, and rice vinegar are my go-tos.

Finally, everything was ready! I arranged the steamers on the table, set out the dipping sauces, and dug in. It was seriously like having a little dim sum restaurant right in my own kitchen! And you know what the best part was? I could eat as much as I wanted without feeling judged!

This whole dim sum bar thing was way easier than I thought it would be. Honestly, it was mostly just waiting for the food to steam. If you’re thinking about trying it, just do it! It’s a fun and delicious way to enjoy a weekend brunch or even a weeknight dinner. You won’t regret it!
