Alright, so the other day I got reminded of that movie, “Dim Sum Funeral”. It popped into my head, can’t even remember why exactly, maybe I saw one of the actors in something else recently. Anyway, I decided to actually sit down and look into who was in it again. It’s been a while.

So, I pulled up the cast list. Took me a minute to find it, just scrolling through some pages online. No fancy tools, just plain searching. I saw a few names I recognized right off the bat.
Checking Out the Actors
Yeah, there was Talia Shire. Of course, you know, from Rocky and The Godfather. It’s always interesting seeing actors like that pop up in smaller, different kinds of films later on. Then there was Russell Wong. I remember seeing him in quite a few things back in the day, usually action stuff, so seeing him in this kind of family drama was a bit different.
And the daughters, right?
- Kelly Hu
- Bai Ling
- Steph Song
I recognized Kelly Hu, she’s been in a bunch of stuff too. Bai Ling, yeah, she definitely has a memorable presence on screen. Steph Song, maybe less familiar to me, but I looked her up briefly too.
Just Thinking About It
Watching the movie itself, or rather, remembering watching it years ago after looking up the cast again, was kinda interesting. It wasn’t some big blockbuster, more of a quiet, character-driven thing. You have this estranged family forced back together by the mom’s death, and all the old tensions just bubble up. It felt pretty grounded in that way.

The whole setup, gathering for this “dim sum funeral” as the mom requested, felt like a specific cultural thing, but the family drama? That felt universal. Everyone’s got family baggage, right? Seeing how these specific actors handled those dynamics was the main thing I focused on this time around. Each brought something different. Shire as the sort of outsider step-mom figure, Wong as the son trying to keep peace, and the sisters with all their complicated history.
Didn’t do a deep dive analysis or anything, just spent some time thinking about the performances and how they fit together. It’s funny how sometimes just revisiting the cast list of an old movie can send you down a little rabbit hole like that. Makes you appreciate the mix of talent they brought together for it.
