Cheap Dim Sum Chinatown Boston: Delicious Bites on a Budget!

Okay, so today I want to talk about my dim sum adventure in Chinatown, Boston. It all started on a sunny Saturday morning. I woke up early, with a big craving for some good old dim sum. I quickly did some research online and found a list of places on Yelp, like Dynasty, Hei La Moon, and a few others. Tripadvisor also had some good shouts, and there was a place called Gene’s Chinese Flatbread Cafe just north of Chinatown that caught my eye.

I decided to hit up a few spots. First up was Dynasty. I got there around 10 AM, and the place was already buzzing. I grabbed a number and waited for about 20 minutes. The wait was worth it. I ordered the usual suspects – har gow, siu mai, and some BBQ pork buns. They were all pretty solid, especially the har gow. The shrimp inside was plump and juicy, and the wrapper was just the right thickness.

Next, I walked over to Hei La Moon. This place was huge! I was seated right away, which was a nice surprise. I tried their chicken feet, some more siu mai, and a few other dishes that the servers recommended. The chicken feet were tender and flavorful, but I have to say, the siu mai here was a bit of a letdown compared to Dynasty.

  • Stopped by Great Taste Bakery & Restaurant.
  • Tried a couple of their egg tarts and a pineapple bun.
  • The egg tarts were amazing – flaky crust and a creamy, not-too-sweet filling.

After that, I decided to venture a bit outside of Chinatown and check out Gene’s Chinese Flatbread Cafe. The menu here was different – they had a lot of hand-pulled noodles and flatbread sandwiches. I ordered a beef flatbread sandwich, and it was an experience. The bread was chewy and had a nice char to it, and the beef was tender and well-seasoned. It was a nice change of pace from the usual dim sum fare.

By this point, I was stuffed, but I had to make one last stop at Dumpling King. The name says it all. I had to get some dumplings. The pan-fried pork and chive dumplings were the highlight. Crispy on the bottom, juicy on the inside – they were perfect. I also tried some soup dumplings, which were good, but not the best I’ve ever had.

Overall Impression

My dim sum journey in Boston’s Chinatown was a success. I got to try a variety of dishes from different places, and each spot had its own highlights. If you’re looking for classic dim sum, Dynasty and Hei La Moon are great choices. For something a bit different, definitely check out Gene’s Chinese Flatbread Cafe. And if you’re a dumpling lover, Dumpling King won’t disappoint. Just remember to go early or be prepared to wait, especially on weekends.

I would go back to Dynasty for sure. I loved the vibe and the food was top-notch. Hei La Moon was okay, but I think I’d rather try some other places next time. And Gene’s Chinese Flatbread Cafe is definitely on my list for a return visit – that beef flatbread sandwich was calling my name.

That’s it for my Boston Chinatown dim sum adventure. Hope this gives you some ideas for your next food trip. Just remember to wear stretchy pants!
