Okay, so yesterday I tried my hand at making some dim sum, specifically the deep-fried kind. Let me tell you, it was a bit of an adventure! I’ve always loved those crispy, golden goodies you get at dim sum restaurants, and I figured, how hard could it be?

First off, I had to gather all the ingredients. I already knew dim sum has lots of different dishes, like those steamed dumplings and buns, and things like siu mai and har gow, but I was focused on the fried stuff this time. I made a quick run to the grocery store and grabbed some ground pork, shrimp, those little dried mushrooms, and a bunch of other stuff. Oh, and of course, the wonton wrappers – can’t forget those!

The Prep Work

Back home, I started by soaking the dried mushrooms. Then, I chopped up the shrimp and mixed it with the ground pork. I tossed in some soy sauce, a bit of sesame oil, and some other seasonings I had in the pantry, you know, to make it taste good.

Next came the fun part – assembling the little guys. I laid out the wonton wrappers and started spooning the mixture into each one. It took a bit to get the hang of folding them properly, I messed up a few but got the hang of it quickly. My first few looked a bit wonky, but hey, practice makes perfect, right?

Frying Time!

Once I had a decent batch assembled, it was time to fry. I heated up some oil in a pan – not too deep, just enough to cover the bottoms of the dim sum. I carefully placed them in the hot oil and watched them sizzle. The smell was amazing! They turned golden brown pretty quickly, and I had to flip them over to make sure they cooked evenly.

The Taste Test

Finally, they were done! I pulled them out of the pan and let them cool for a bit on some paper towels. Then came the moment of truth – the taste test. I took a bite, and… not bad! They were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Definitely not as perfect as the ones at my favorite dim sum place, but pretty darn good for a first try.

  • The filling was flavorful, although next time I might add a bit more seasoning.
  • The wrappers were nice and crispy.
  • But I think I should use more oil to deep fry them next time.

All in all, it was a fun experience. It’s definitely something I’ll try again, maybe with a different filling next time. Who knows, maybe I’ll even get good enough to host my own dim sum brunch someday! Just need to practice my tea pouring skills.

It’s kind of a hassle, to be honest. It’s much easier to just go out and have someone else make them for you. But it was a fun thing to try at home, and not as hard as I thought it would be! So if you’re thinking about trying it, just go for it! What do you have to lose, except maybe a few wonky-looking dumplings?
