Well, lemme tell ya, if you ever find yourself in Phoenix and you’re cravin’ some Chinese takeout, you ain’t alone. Folks in this city sure do love their Chinese food, and it ain’t just the locals. Tourists from all over the place come lookin’ for that good ol’ Chinese takeout. Now, back in my day, we didn’t have all these fancy restaurants, but times sure have changed.
First off, you gotta know, Chinese takeout in Phoenix ain’t like it was when it first started comin’ over. Way back when, them Chinese folks started openin’ restaurants here, they mostly cooked what they knew from back home. Some came from Sichuan, others from Canton, and so the food you got depended on where they was from. Now, though, you can find just ’bout every kinda Chinese food in Phoenix—Sichuan, Hunan, Cantonese, and all kinds of noodles and dumplings, too. They even got them sweet and sour dishes that’s real popular with folks ’round here.
Popular Dishes
- General Tso’s Chicken
- Sweet and Sour Pork
- Kung Pao Chicken
- Lo Mein
- Egg Rolls
One thing folks here in Phoenix like to order a lot is that General Tso’s Chicken. Now, I ain’t no chef, but I can tell ya, it’s got this crispy chicken with a sweet and spicy sauce. And don’t forget ’bout the sweet and sour pork. That’s another one that’s real popular. People just love that sticky sauce with the pineapple and them bright red peppers. Makes ya feel like you’re eatin’ somethin’ real fancy.
Another favorite round here is Kung Pao Chicken. Now, lemme tell ya, that dish is full of peanuts, and it’s got this nice kick to it. If you like somethin’ spicy, then that’s the one for ya. They also got lo mein, which is them soft noodles tossed with veggies and meat. Real good comfort food if ya ask me. And don’t forget them egg rolls. Seems like you can’t have a proper takeout meal without ’em, all crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
Now, if you order Chinese takeout here in Phoenix, it’s prob’ly gonna come in them little white containers, you know, the ones that fold up real neat? I reckon they call ’em oyster pails, but everybody just says takeout box. Funny thing is, back in China, they don’t even use ’em. But over here, they’ve become real popular. Guess it makes it easier to carry your food home, so folks like it that way.
And another thing—these restaurants here, they got some interestin’ names. You’ll see a whole lotta “China Express” places poppin’ up. Seems like every other Chinese place’s got that name. There’s also a lotta restaurants with “Dragon” in the name. Don’t see as many “Panda” places, though. Guess folks think dragons are more excitin’ or somethin’.
One thing I noticed is folks ain’t really usin’ the word “Oriental” much anymore when they talk about Chinese food. I reckon people these days are more careful ’bout what they say, tryin’ to be respectful and all that. Back in my day, folks just said whatever came to their minds, but now you gotta be more careful with your words. Times sure have changed, I’ll tell ya that much.
If you’re lookin’ to get some Chinese takeout in Phoenix, you ain’t gonna have trouble findin’ a place. They got restaurants all over the city, from downtown to the suburbs. And you don’t even have to go out if you don’t wanna—just give ’em a call, and they’ll deliver right to your door. Ain’t that somethin’?
So, next time you’re in Phoenix and want some Chinese food, just remember, they got somethin’ for everybody. Whether you like it spicy or sweet, crispy or soft, there’s a dish with your name on it. And don’t forget to order extra egg rolls—you’re gonna wanna save some for later!
