Felt like having some dim sum the other day, you know how those cravings hit. Decided to head over to the west end of Edmonton, heard there were a few spots worth checking out over there. Didn’t have a specific place locked down, just kinda drove in that direction.

Spotted a place that looked pretty busy from the outside. Usually figure that’s a decent sign, more people means the food’s gotta be turning over, right? So, parked the car and went inside.

It was exactly what you’d expect on a weekend morning. Loud, lots of chatter, families everywhere, carts rolling around. Found ourselves a table squeezed in between a couple of big groups. Sat down, and almost immediately someone came over asking about tea. Got the usual jasmine tea going.

The Food Situation

Then the carts started their rounds. It’s always a bit of a controlled chaos trying to see what’s on each one before it zooms past.

  • First thing we grabbed was Har Gow (shrimp dumplings). Had to get those. They were pretty good, shrimp tasted fresh enough.
  • Next up, snagged some Siu Mai (pork dumplings). Also a must-have. These were okay, standard stuff.
  • Saw the cart with the fried goodies. Pointed at the Spring Rolls and some Fried Squid tentacles. The squid was actually quite nice, not too chewy.
  • Someone at the table wanted Char Siu Bao (BBQ pork buns). Got the steamed kind. They were fluffy, filling was sweet like it should be.
  • We also got some Lo Bak Go (pan-fried turnip cake). A bit greasy, but had good flavour with the bits of sausage inside.
  • Finished off with some Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf (Lo Mai Gai). Always takes ages to unwrap, but it’s a solid choice to make sure you’re really full.

The ladies pushing the carts were efficient, maybe a bit too quick. Sometimes they’d plonk the steamer basket down and be off before you could even say thanks. But they kept our teapot filled, which was good.

We just kept eating and pointing until we couldn’t possibly fit anything else in. Stacked up quite a few empty steamer baskets on the edge of the table. It’s never a cheap meal when you get going, but it hits the spot.

Getting the bill took a minute, had to wave someone down. They count up the stamps on your card, tally it all up. Paid at the front counter and then basically rolled ourselves out of there, totally stuffed. Was a decent enough dim sum run out west. Did the job.
